Why is Our Lady of Fatima so important to Christians?
Our Lady of Fatima is one of the most venerated Marian icons in the world , linked to the famous apparitions of 1917 to the three shepherd children Lucia, Francisco and Giacinta.
During the third apparition on July 13 , the Virgin revealed to the children three prophetic secrets that would mark the history of Marian devotion. Two of them were made public in 1941, while the third – delivered under seal to the Pope – remained confidential until June 26, 2000 , when it was revealed in Rome by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Archbishop Tarcisio Bertone .
According to some interpretations, the third secret refers to the attack of 13 May 1981 against Pope John Paul II , which occurred on the very anniversary of the first apparition of Fatima .
The Holy Father, deeply devoted to Our Lady, recognized in the Virgin the miraculous intervention that saved his life and, in 1983, visited his attacker, Mehmet Ali Agca , in prison, who repeatedly asked him which “Queen” had prevented his death.
