What is the meaning of the Peace Medal?
The main symbol of the medal is the monogram of Christ , also called Chi-Rho or Chrismon . It is formed by two letters of the Greek alphabet: X ( chi ) and P ( rho ), which together represent the name of Christ.
This symbol has been used since ancient times as a Christian sign and is one of the most important Christograms .
The letters alpha ( Α ) and omega ( Ω ), the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, also appear on the medal. They symbolize that everything has a beginning and an end : a condition found exclusively in the peace of Jesus .
The Chi-Rho, intertwined with the alpha and omega, forms the Latin word “ Pax ,” meaning peace. In Greek, however, the same letters indicate Christ (“ Christós ”).
On the back of the medal is depicted the face of the Madonna with the title of Mater Ecclesiae ( Mother of the Church ), a very important symbol for the Christian faith.
This title became even more significant after the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in May 1981. Having miraculously survived, the Pope wanted to express his gratitude by having a mosaic icon of the Mater Ecclesiae placed on the facade of a building between the Courtyard of San Damaso and St. Peter's Square.
Since then, Mater Ecclesiae has been considered the protector of health and continues to be a strong symbol of devotion .
